Tech can help you look after your heart

Professor Liam Glynn

Professor of General Practice at the Graduate Entry Medical, University of Limerick

Technology has a key role to play in helping people to keep their blood pressure at healthy levels. There are big benefits to health technology.

Whether it’s banking, shopping, or even learning something new, technology is continually impacting our behaviour. Furthermore, our health can be impacted. Blood pressure-related tech is abundant and accessible.

Exercise makes the heart and blood vessels more flexible and efficient. Similarly it produces positive hormones that can benefit a whole range of health conditions.

The big benefits of health technology

The benefits of health technology can help you to understand the impact of your lifestyle on your blood pressure, record useful information for future GP consultations and even offer you advice on medicine doses.

But, perhaps one of the most useful benefits of health technology, says Professor Liam Glynn, is that it can support people to get active. This is particularly true when they are busy.

“Mans best medicine is walking” he says. Exercise makes the heart and blood vessels more flexible and efficient. Similarly, it produces positive hormones that can benefit a whole range of health conditions. In borderline-high blood pressure, exercise can even reduce or avoid the need to use medication.

Professor Glynn believes that technology can be helpful in many ways.
